CONFEDERATE SECTION OF THE OLD CITY CEMETERY
PEST HOUSE MEDICAL MUSEUM -- A TALE OF HISTORIC COURAGE AND LOVE!

The Confederate Section of the historic Old City Cemetery serves as the final resting place for more than 2,200 individually marked graves on Confederate soldiers from 14 states. Nearby is the Pest House Medical Museum. One room depicts conditions in the House of Pestilence quarantine hospital during the Civil War. The second room is furnished as Dr. John J. Terrell's office when he practiced medicine in the area in the late 1800s. A monument to the memory of the 99 soldiers who died of smallpox in the Pest House during the war is located near the entrance to the adjacent Confederate Section.
Many self-interpretive tablets and a variety of brochures are available at the information gatehouse and throughout the recently restored cemetery. Antique roses and period plantings contribute to the horticultural significance and beauty.
The cemetery is free and open daily, dawn to dusk. Guided tours are available by appointment. 4th & Taylor Streets. 434-847-1465. www.lynchburgbiz.com/occ
